Challenge Tournament Canceled; Special Board Meeting on May 7th!

Regrettably the JIOFC Challenge has been cancelled this year due primarily to lack of volunteers. Since we are no longer partnered with the “Lov Docs”, the Board of Directors has been asking for volunteers at meetings over the last several months to help with the preparations. Tournament preparation includes gathering support of local businesses for prizes and cash donations. To date we have no volunteers. The member dues do not pay for day to day club expenses (meeting place, insurance, holiday party, AOY awards meeting, etc.).  The tournament has been the main fund raising event of the Club for the last several years, which has enabled us to fund “Fishing with the Kids”, along with donations to several local charitable organizations like CCA. The Board will be meeting to discuss which club functions will need to be discontinued and which club functions can continue to exist.  Do we really want to make cutbacks?  Can we put together some type of on going tournament or fund raising committee? With appropriate cutbacks, the Club is financially strong enough to continue for the next few years, but not much longer. It takes volunteers.  Members need to step up and assist in planning as well as participate in events. Get involved!  We encourage all members to attend the special Board meeting on Wednesday May 7th at 7:00 pm at the upstairs meeting room at Sugar Cane Bistro in Jupiter (US 1 just south of Outback) Remember this club belongs to all of us, so let’s figure out a way to get it back on track. Questions? Call Scott LaFave at  772-971-7961.

JIOFC Funament Breaks Record for Attendance and Fun!!!

The Funament held Saturday Feb 16th was a major hit! 14 boats participated and close to 75 people showed up for the cookout afterward!

Ethan Haas' smile reflects the mood of the day as he shows off his killer jack caught right off dad Carl's 33 Grady White Express while at the dock at the Jib Club!

Check out the fun!

Goldman Gets'Em!

Gary Goldman and friends Ryan Frederick and Brooke McCormick did good Saturday Jan 26th.  Fishing on the 35' Contender ISLANDAZE, they found tons of bait suspended above the bottom in 120 to 180 feet of water south of the Jupiter Inlet (north of the pier).  They were rewarded with a nice dolphin & a nice sail - which they released successfully!  Great Job!

More Species! - More Possible Points!
Inshore AND Offshore!

JIOFC Angler of the Year Contest Keeps Getting Better!

Effective at 12:01 a.m. January 15th, JIOFC Angler of the Year species and species points has been increased dramatically. Enclosed find the new rules, eligible species, point totals and 2 new entry forms. Please use the new forms immediately… toss all your old ones. Additional weigh slips are available for printing by clicking on the link on the front page of the website.

The club made these changes based on recommendations from a number of members and feels the additional species – inshore and offshore – will give more of our anglers a chance to participate in the annual contest.

If you have already submitted a fish you may be contacted to “fine tune” your choice, if necessary. For example, if you submitted a snapper you will be contacted and asked which species it was (e.g., yellowtail, mutton, etc.). Your fish will be put into that specific species slot, and you’ll have the opportunity to earn more points by catching any or all the other eligible snapper species.

Remember, you can fish alone and still weigh in your catch to have it count for AOY points. Just have the weigh-in witnessed and include the witness info on the entry form.

If you have any questions on the contest itself, contact Steve Anderson at 772-485-5334 or via email at: STAndrsn77@aol.com. If you have questions about your point totals, contact Ryan LaFave at ryan@nolooseendsfishing.com.

Now get out there and do some serious fishing!!!

Turtles. As a fisherman, we all see them. But do you know what type it is? How far it travels? How old they can get? Who are their predators? Most of these questions can't be answered by very many of us. All's we know is that they're cute as all heck, and we all have some sort of affection for them. Nanette Lawrenson,Executive Director of The Loggerhead Marinelife Center will be joining us to discuss how to identify them; their travels; eating habits; predators; and how they relate to the overall marine conservation movement to help and replenish. We think most of you will find this highly interesting and informative.Come join us in welcoming Nanette tell us about another facet of our Marine Life.

New Snook Regs Looming

Tighter Bag limits, narrower slot limits are proposed

Anglers may see new snook regulations soon. Changes to snook bag and size limits and harvest seasons were proposed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on Thursday.

This action is intended to provide additional protection for Florida’s valuable snook populations, which are considered to be fairly healthy on the state’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts. However, the FWC believes a reduction in harvest is necessary to help achieve the Commission’s management goal for snook and sustain and improve the fishery.

The latest FWC stock assessment for snook concluded the management goal of a 40-percent spawning potential ratio established for this fishery is not being met, and increasing fishing effort and habitat loss are contributing to the declining rate.

The FWC has proposed rule amendments to reduce the snook daily recreational bag limit from two fish to one on the Atlantic Coast, which would coincide with the one-fish limit now in place on the Gulf Coast and in waters of Everglades National Park and Monroe County. The rules also would change the current 27-34 inches total length snook slot limit to 28-32 inches in the Atlantic and 28-33 inches in Gulf, Everglades and Monroe County waters.

No changes are proposed for the Dec. 15 – Jan. 31 and June-August snook closed harvest seasons in the Atlantic, however the rules would add the first half of December and the month of February to the Dec. 15 – Jan. 31 and May-August snook closed harvest seasons in the Gulf, Everglades and Monroe County.

Another rule proposal would allow snook anglers to carry more than one cast net aboard a vessel. Right now, anglers who possess a snook on a vessel are allowed to have only one secured and stored cast net aboard the vessel.

The proposed snook rule changes were initiated by a workgroup formed by the FWC to help evaluate management of the snook fishery. A series of public workshops was recently held in Central and South Florida to allow comment and input regarding the proposals. Final public hearing on the proposed snook rules will take place during the FWC’s June 13-14 meeting in Melbourne.
